Vox in the Stars

An annual musical event like no other: evocative, celestially-inspired choral music performed under the stars, within the historic Plaskett Telescope dome. An experience sure to move you to wonder and awe at our place in the cosmos.
This year we will include two very special pieces by Victoria-based composers: Christine Donkin’s evocative ‘Aurora’, featuring Mieka Michaux on viola, and Chris Sivak’s recently-composed ‘Star Light, Star Bright,’ newly arranged by the composer for mixed voices.

A choral concert exploring the beauty and strangeness of dreams through works by Whitacre, Britten, Tallis, Elgar, Tavener, and more.
Centered around Eric Whitacre's Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine, and Benjamin Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecelia, the concert will explore the eclectic and spiritual forms that dreams and visions can take. From flying machines, to dragons, speaking in tongues, mythical figures, and the immortality born of creative vision. We can dream and imagine what we want for our lives, but often dreams and visions come with unintended strangeness, which makes the experience all the more colorful and mysterious. The concert will also include music by Thomas Tallis, Andrew Balfour, Edward Elgar and John Tavener.
Life and Laughter

Life is a collection of moments and experiences, ranging from the ridiculous to the profound, from the sad and the poignant, to the joyous and mirthful. This is a choral concert aiming to explore this from both a philosophical and a humorous perspective, leaving folk thoughtful but also with a twinkle in their eyes and a smile on their lips. At the centre of the programme is music by Samuel Barber and Paul Hindemith. Barber's Reincarnations are three choral songs on poems by James Stephens on themes of passionate love, anguish, and simple pleasures: Mary Hynes, Anthony O Daly, and The Coolin. Hindemith's Six Chansons are on poetry by Rainier Maria Rilke--The Doe, The Swan, Since all is passing, Springtime, In Winter, and The Orchard--and are resonant of the stages of life, from innocence through to the late years and the beyond. The programme will be rounded out by shorter choral works by Kathleen Allan, Sarah Rimkus, Leonard Cohen, and others, including light-hearted pieces and a few familiar favourites.

Of the Earth

The natural world - its grandeur, beauty, and permanence - has been an inspiration for poets and musicians for centuries, but there is a new and different imperative to singing and writing about the earth as we watch the worldwide disruption of natural systems that seemed immutable. Our world is beautiful, yet fragile, and we are not just closely linked with it, but are truly of the earth - clay into which life has been breathed; the earth is our soul. This is a concert of music exploring our relationship with the earth, but despite all, ultimately optimistic in outlook: if we renew the earth, we renew ourselves, and our relationships with one another. Featured on this concert will be a new commission by Kim Farris-Manning, as well as Eric Esenvalds, Andrew Balfour, Marie Alice Conrad, Charles Stanford, and laura hawley.
